Hillclimb Rules AMA-sanctioned events operate according to the rules developed and written by AMA Congress, the rules-making body of the AMA. The AMA Amateur Competition Rulebook (available below) is for the exclusive use of AMA-chartered clubs and promoters running AMA-sanctioned events. The rule book applies to all AMA-sanctioned competition. Supplemental regulations are additions to the rule book based on the needs of a specific series. All supplemental regulations must be approved by the AMA. Hillclimb rules are included in the AMA Amateur Competition Rulebook. AMA Amateur Hillclimb Eligibility Requirements • Twelve years old is the minimum age for an amateur hillclimb rider to compete in an American Motorcyclist Association-sanctioned event on any motorcycle displacing up to 250cc. To race any motorcycle displacing more than 250cc, a rider must be 14 years of age or older. The age of the rider is determined on the date of the event, except in youth competition. • With the following qualifications, a provisional AMA Pro Racing Hillclimb License will allow a current amateur hillclimb competitor to compete in up to, but no more than, one race less than 50% of the AMA Pro Racing Pro Hillclimb sanctioned events, while maintaining their amateur status in AMA sanctioned events. If a rider elects to compete in 50% or more races, their AMA Pro Racing provisional license will be upgraded to a professional license and amateur status removed. o Riders who have finished within the top 30 percent in the 450cc, 600cc or 750cc open classes during the previous two seasons of the AMA Amateur Hillclimb Grand Championship o Riders must be 16 years old when applying for a provisional AMA Pro Racing Hillclimb License o Must comply with AMA Pro Hillclimb Rulebook 2021 AMA Racing Rulebook Update The following rule change was created through the AMA Competition Commissions process. The change has been approved by the AMA Board of Directors and will go into effect January 1, 2021. New rules for the 2021 season are shown and printed in bold italic type. Update to be included in all amateur AMA Racing disciplines: All helmets must be intact and no modification may be made to their construction that alters the helmet from the condition it was tested and approved. The helmet is made to provide protection and is not a platform to attach foreign objects. For example, cameras or other accessories are NOT permitted to be attached to the rider's helmet.
